BIOGRAPHY

Jonathan Greenup has lived in South Dorset all his life. He studied Fine Art at Shelley Park, where he graduated with distinction in 1985. He has been painting for more than twenty years, and his work is owned and appreciated by many discerning collectors. His subjects broadly fall into the areas of landscape, still life, animals and

urban scenes, and his preferred medium is oil or acrylic on canvas.

A great deal of thoughtful preparation goes into his landscape compositions, which predominantly include local scenes with an emphasis on coastal subjects, and this is undoubtedly part of the reason for his success. However, his paintings are also imbued with an unusual quality of immediacy, so that the viewer feels a proximity or even part

of the scene. The fact that his roots are here, in this landscape, is tangible.

His still life paintings are highly evocative, richly coloured compositions expressing warmth and vigour. This side of his painting is clearly about interiors, and about the dynamics of form and colour within a context that is almost intimate. His animal paintings are also characterised by a feeling of closeness, again capturing the essence of a relationship. A further theme of his work relates to the character of structures in an urban context. There is a degree of abstract brushwork here, working to create an unexpected and refreshing interpretation of the street scenes and buildings that have

inspired him.

Jonathan Greenup has exhibited widely throughout Dorset and the South West. He is represented by a number of galleries and a selection of his pictures can be seen at the Rembrandt Hotel in Weymouth. He also exhibits with a local group called the Rodwell artists showing at the Hotel Rembrandt.
